-
- (C) 1989. Shareware by Darek Mihocka and Ignac Kolenko
-
- Features
- --------
-
- Quick ST increases the speed at which the ST performs screen operations,
- such as printing text to the screen, scrolling the screen, drawing windows
- and dialog boxes, and reducing the overhead of other graphics operations.
-
- Printing of text to the screen is sped up from 200%-1500%, depending on
- the font, screen resolution, and version of Quick ST used. Screen
- scrolling is sped up from 30%-80%. The speed of GEM operations such as
- line drawing is roughly doubled, and in general, dialog boxes and windows
- are drawn 50%-100% faster.
-
- The result is that your Atari ST appears to run faster and smoother. You
- spend less time waiting for the screen to scroll or redraw. Remember,
- Quick ST does not physically make your ST any faster. It simply makes TOS
- more efficient at manipulating the screen display. Quick ST does not have
- any effect on most video games, PC Ditto, Magic Sac, or other programs
- that do not use TOS directly.
-
- Quick ST runs from the AUTO folder and so does not use any desk accessory
- slots or require interaction with the user. It is completely transparent
- to most applications.
-
- How It Works
- ------------
-
- Quick ST performs in software what can otherwise be done using hardware
- modifications, such as the blitter chip and 16 MHz accelerator boards.
- When used with these hardware devices, Quick ST performs even faster.
-
- Quick ST uses under 20K of RAM. Quick ST automatically installs either the
- color or monochrome version and throws away initialization code.
-
- For the technical reader, Quick ST replaces the following operating system
- functions with faster, more efficient, machine language routines: BIOS
- Bconout(), GEMDOS Cconws(), VDI v_gtext(), VDI v_pline(), and assorted
- other VDI functions.
-
- Quick ST has been extensively tested with all versions of TOS, different
- versions of GDOS, most common AUTO folder utilities and desk accessories,
- and most common applications, and found to work with all of them. Although
- we cannot guarantee that Quick ST works with all programs, due to the
- large number of programs that we have not tested, every attempt has been
- made to assure Quick ST's compatibility. Thanks to all the testers who
- have been testing and reporting bugs over the last 3 months, this version
- of Quick ST will work with most ST systems without problems.
-
- Requirements
- ------------
-
- Minimum Hardware required:
- - 256K (or more) Atari ST with floppy disk
- - standard SC1224 color or SM124 monochrome monitor
-
- Optional hardware (for better performance):
- - blitter chip
- - hard disk (for faster booting)
-
- TOS required: any version of TOS (TOS 1.0, TOS 1.2, or TOS 1.4)
-
- Supports the following resolutions:
- - 320x200 low resolution (speeds up text only)
- - 640x200 medium resolution
- - 640x400 monochrome
-
- Permissions
- -----------
-
- Quick ST is shareware, and is NOT public domain.
-
- The Quick ST 1.6 demo may be copied unmodified by Atari ST users to give
- to other users, uploaded to the online services Compuserve, GEnie, Delphi,
- and BIX, uploaded to Usenet, and distributed by Atari ST user groups for
- no charge other than the cost of the disk. It may be bundled together by
- dealers when selling ST systems. It may NOT be sold by any organization
- which sells public domain or shareware software by mail order.
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- This release of Quick ST consists of three files, which must be
- distributed together. The files are:
-
- QUICKSTC.PRG - color version of Quick ST 1.6 demo
- QUICKSTM.PRG - monochrome version of Quick ST 1.6 demo
- QUICKST.DOC - documentation (this file)
-
- To install Quick ST, copy the appropriate color or monochrome version of
- Quick ST to the AUTO folder of your boot disk. If an AUTO folder does not
- exist, create one first using the New Folder command of the ST desktop.
-
- If you use both color and monochrome monitors, copy both files to your
- AUTO folder. The correct version will load automatically when you boot.
-
- When Quick ST is installed, it indicates this by replacing the desktop's
- Desk menu heading with a Fuji symbol. There is no time limit with this
- demo. It will remain installed as long as the computer is turned on. This
- demo version is slower than the registered version of Quick ST 1.6.
-
- Make Shareware Work
- -------------------
-
- Quick ST is shareware. What this means is that it may be copied and used
- freely by all Atari ST users. We believe in keeping software prices low,
- and what better way than to distribute the software for free! If after
- trying Quick ST you decide to continue using it, we ask that you become a
- registered user of the program. To register, send a $15 check or money
- order (payable to Darek Mihocka) along with your name, FULL mailing
- address, and phone number to the address below. Registered users then
- receive the full color and monochrome versions of Quick ST 1.6, and are
- then entitled to free updates of future versions of Quick ST, which are
- distributed by disk or email.
-
- Quick ST is also available as part of the Quick Utilities, which includes
- programs like the Quick View file viewer, Quick Find file finder, Quick
- Inf desktop environment editor, Quick Index benchamarking program, and
- others. See the September 1989 issue of the U.K. ST WORLD magazine for a
- full review, download shareware versions of the Quick Utilities from your
- favorite online service or BBS, or write to us for more information. Also,
- your Quick ST registration will be applied towards your Quick Utilities
- registration if you later choose to register for both.
-
- Because we believe in and support user groups, we are offering Quick ST to
- all full time members of Atari ST user groups for only $12. We ask that at
- least 5 people from the same user group register, and you must provide
- proof of membership (i.e. photocopy of membership card, official member
- list, etc). There is no time limit on this, so please take the time to
- demo Quick ST at your user group and explain the benefits of shareware.
-
- Please update any older versions of Quick ST which may currently be
- available for download on bulletin boards or in user group libraries with
- this Quick ST 1.6 demo.
-
- The registered versions of Quick ST 1.6 are even faster than this demo.
- They also contain other features which are used with the Quick Utilities
- software. There is also a smaller version of Quick ST 1.6 available for
- use on 520ST systems where memory is tight.
-
- Our mailing address for shareware registrations, questions, comments, and
- updates is:
- PO Box 2624, Station B
- Kitchener, Ontario N2H 6N2
- CANADA
-
- Phone (in Canada): (519)-747-9452.
-
- If you prefer to contact us by email, we can be reached at the following:
-
- Compuserve: 73657,2714
- BIX, Delphi, GEnie: DAREKM
- UNIX: uunet!microsoft!w-darekm (until end of 1989) or uunet!electro!ignac
-
- There is a public message topic set up on GEnie for Quick ST related
- messages. It is topic 13 in category 2 of the Atari ST bulletin board.
-
- On Compuserve, leave questions in the ATARIPRO (Atari Productivity) SIG.
-
- Finally, some people have asked us if we really do listen to bug reports.
- Yes we do! That is the reason the message topics and email accounts are
- set up. If it had not been for the many bug reports that have come in over
- the last few months, this version of Quick ST would not exist. In some
- cases, we have received, fixed, and sent updates out on the same day. You
- do not have to wait 6 months for an update, and if you have a modem or
- access to UNIX, you can receive updates as soon as they are available.
-
- Troubleshooting
- ---------------
-
- Although every attempt has been made to resolve all incompatibility
- issues, we have found a few problms with this demo. The program Analyzer
- may not work. Also, when using Hotwire 1.4 (not 1.0), you must make sure
- that Hotwire loads before Quick ST. This may require rearranging the order
- of files in the AUTO folder. Most incompatibility problems will usually be
- related to some other AUTO folder program or desk accessory.
-
- In most other cases, the order in which Quick ST loads from the AUTO
- folder is not important. Quick ST has been tested with Hotwire, Multidesk,
- G+PLUS, Atari GDOS, Universal Item Selector II, Easel ST, Font Tricks,
- Control Panel, and other popular AUTO folder programs and desk
- accessories. It has been tested on systems ranging from a 512K 520ST with
- TOS 1.0, to a Mega 4 ST with the latest TOS 1.4 and blitter chip. Our
- thanks go to our beta testers Dan and Bud Berg at Xanth Computers, Ron
- Webber, and Mel Motogawa.
-
- If you do suspect a problem with Quick ST and a particular piece of
- software, try to reproduce the problem several times. Then remove Quick ST
- from the AUTO folder and try again. If the problem goes away, please
- report it to us. If a problem is suspected with an AUTO folder program,
- try arranging the order of programs in the AUTO folder twice, so that one
- time Quick ST loads before the program in question, and then after.
